Medal of Honor Society Names Fisher House Foundation as One of its 2017 Citizen Honors Award Winners

The Congressional Medal of Honor Society selected military non-profit, Fisher House Foundation as one of its 2017 Citizen Honors Award winners to recognize US citizens and community organizations for their acts of courage and selfless service that epitomize the American spirit. 

“This award recognizes and celebrates the exceptional deeds that Fisher House Foundation performs every day in communities across our Nation,” said Thomas G. Kelley, Medal of Honor recipient and president of the Congressional Medal of Honor Society.

 Fisher House Foundation has long had a partnership with the Medal of Honor Society.  When each Fisher House is built, the Society presents a special plaque to hang in the home.  These plaques are typically presented during the dedication ceremonies by Medal of Honor Recipients.  On the plaque are the solemn words:

“Dedicated to Zachary and Elizabeth Fisher for the unselfish commitment to improve the quality of life to the members of our Armed Forces and our Nation’s veterans and families by providing a ‘Home Away From Home’ for those who are serving and have served.”

 “I have nothing but utmost respect and thanks to each and every member of the Medal of Honor Society,” said Ken Fisher, Chairman and CEO of Fisher House Foundation.  “It’s an honor for our Foundation to be recognized by such an esteemed group of our Nation’s heroes.  I commit to you and to all our military, veterans and their families, that Fisher House Foundation will continue to be there to support their needs—be it a WWII veteran or a 19-year-old service member.  All have earned our deepest respect and thanks.”

The award will be presented on March 25 at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall in Arlington, VA. 

 “Our 2017 winners embody the spirit of the Medal of Honor and represent the highest levels of service and heroism,” said Kelley.  “They’ve earned this award through their courage, selfless service or commitment to our Nation’s military service members and families.”

Other Recipients include:

·         Jacob Ellis of Columbia, Missouri and Adam Brunk of Holts Summit, Missouri, were selected for their courageous act on August 21, 2016, when they rescued two people injured in a traffic accident. Ellis and Brunk freed the accident victims just before their car was engulfed in fire.

·         Molly Hudgens of Ashland City, Tennessee, was selected for her courageous act on September 29, 2016, when she prevented a 14-year old middle school student from shooting teachers and administrators at Sycamore Middle School. Hudgens spoke with the student for 45 minutes until he agreed to surrender. No shots were fired during the incident.

·         Travis Ellis of Senoia, Georgia, was selected for his selfless service in support of veterans through his work with Shepherd's Men, a nonprofit organization that raises awareness and funds to support post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injuries among service members. Ellis' efforts support the patients at the SHARE Military Initiative at Shepherd Center, a PTS and TBI rehab program.

·         Katelyn Ibarra of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, was selected for her heroism in assisting several citizens injured in a traffic accident. Before emergency medical professionals arrived, Ibarra provided critical first-aid assistance and removed injured passengers from the immediate accident scene. Ibarra was trained in first aid through the Girl Scouts of Colorado.

Directors,

Directors,  Len and I met with Cadie and Maria today.  It was an excellent friendly lengthy meeting.  Scheduled for 30 minutes it lasted for 1.5hrs.  A complete reversal.  We will be meeting the first Wednesday of the month at 2:30pm until further notice.  All board members are invited to attend.  In addition we are being  encouraged to be involved in activities at the LVFH. 

   Volunteer Recognition event April 22 (not to be confused with VAVS Volunteer event).

   Founders Day Celebrations September 22and 23.

   A monthly dinner for the guests prepared and served by NVF.

There are also some requests for funding.

   An estimated $500 to 700/6 mos for furniture upkeep.

   ? Cost for laundry service for Duvet covers (sheets are to be done for free).

   ? Recognition Awards for LVFH Volunteers.

   Storage unit.

Cooperation was the word for this meeting.  I could not be more encouraged, relieved, overjoyed.  Patience is a virtue.  Cadie is even going to see if she can access the station Fisher House account.  Even she does not know the balance or if it has been accessed by others.  Nobody knows.  Soon we will and that monkey will off my back.

I ask for your votes for the furniture upkeep expenditure and for renting a self storage unit for the Christmas supplies, paint and wall paper left overs and whatever other nonessentials we can get out of the house.  This may be temporary or permanent.  It beats all the expense, hassle and ugliness of a storage container somewhere on the campus.  Someone will have to leave the house anyway and there are volunteers to do the fetching.  Also for the Volunteer Awards for Cadie's committed volunteers.  It will not be much for a couple of golf shirts, mugs and whatever.  Without specific info we will delay action on the laundry request but one of the volunteers found a service to gift doing the sheets once a week.  I expect we will decide to support that.

FYI -    The three-hour program,   “Our Greatest National Treasure,” about Fisher House is being offered for broadcast to news/talk radio stations this Memorial Day weekend, as well as "The Gift" a version playing on country music stations.   Over 200 radio stations (including numerous Iheartradio.com and CBS.Com stations)  across the country will be broadcasting the programs sometime over the the next three days.   Don't be surprised if people in your local area mention to you that they heard something on the radio about Fisher House this weekend.

I don't have a list of all the stations that are playing them, but chances are your local talk radio or country station has probably will air the show.

LAS VEGAS (May XX 2016) – This Memorial Day weekend, Grand Bazaar Shops, in partnership with Royalty Exotic Cars, invites locals and Las Vegas visitors to support military and veterans’ families through the Las Vegas Fisher House. The first Fisher House in Nevada, the Las Vegas Fisher House at the VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System opened in February 2016 and provides free lodging for families of wounded, injured, and ill military and veterans while their loved one undergoes treatment.

In addition to the car rental prizes, Royalty Exotic Cars has also donated $2,000 to the Las Vegas Fisher House to begin the weekend. Those that donate a minimum of $10 will also receive a $10 shopping voucher to use at Grand Bazaar Shops as a thank you for their support.
